We provide BS4142 Noise Assessments in Bedfordshire for all types of situations. Normally a BS4142 Noise Assessment will be requested by your local planning or environmental health department when introducing a new noise source to existing noise sensitive receivers. A Brief Description of BS4142 Noise Assessments BS4142 rates the likelihood of complaints by looking at how much noise the new noise source generates and comparing it to the local background level. BS4142 accounts for ‘acoustic features’ namely tonal or intermittent noises generated by the new activity by introducing a correction factor in the form of a 5dB ‘penalty’ to be added to the specific noise in question. The rating level is a measurement of the new noise source or activity
when corrections for any tonal noise, background noise or distance corrections
have been made. The BS4142 Noise Assessment method prescribes that the
measured background noise level is subtracted from the rating level.
According to BS4142 the greater this difference the greater the likelihood
of complaints. • A difference of around +10 dB or more indicates that complaints are
likely. British Standard 4142 is commonly used as a basis for planning permission conditions by Local Authorities - although it is worth noting that the foreword to the document accepts that it is by necessity general in its character and that it ‘may not cover all situations’ and that an individual or a community’s response to noise will be subjective. BS4142 is not considered to be an appropriate assessment method for those areas of the country where background levels are below 30dB and the rating level is around 35dB. Of course we won’t know that until our consultant gets on site.BS4142 covers assessment of noise for both day and night time periods to account for relevant periods of operation of the noise source. The wording of the BS4142 standard states that BS4142 describes “methods for determining, at the outside of a building: a. noise levels from factories, or industrial premises, or fixed installations, or sources of an industrial nature in commercial premises. b. background noise level.” In our experience the assessment method from BS4142 is regularly used by planning departments as a condition for this type of installation, together with air conditioning units and the like installed into domestic premises. And as BS4142 uses the current ambient background noise of your location
as its baseline for comparison there are some situations where you might
have to go the extra mile in terms of acoustic treatment of the installation
in order to get it through the planning process. It all depends on where
you live, how much noise there is around your area, and how close the
neighbours are to your air source heat pump. The BS 4142 Noise Survey should be carried out by a suitably qualified acoustic consultant. This noise survey is an essential element in calculating the extent of the noise problem and helps to determine what changes if any will be required to the proposed site so that the residents of the dwelling are not affected by the industrial noise. We at Air Pressure Testing Ltd are experts at carrying out noise surveys in Bedfordshire you and to ensure that our survey fully fills the Local Authorities requirements, we will contact the L.A and establish the criteria and duration of the survey. To carry out the necessary calculations, we will need a full set of drawings along with construction details which we would then be able to use to calculate the expected Sound Insulation value of the proposed dwelling(s) and assess whether additional measures are required. The noise survey itself would need to be at least 24 hrs in duration although it may actually last longer in order for us to get enough data. The measurement equipment would normally need to be left in a secure location for the survey, however if there are no secure buildings on the site then we would probably need to arrange personnel to supervise the kit and to avoid theft or tampering. The survey must be carried out during mild weather conditions, excessive wind or precipitation will affect the results of the survey, and therefore we try and avoid these conditions when arranging the noise survey in Bedfordshire. The likelihood of complaint about noise from industrial development can be assessed using guidance in BS4142:1997. Since background noise levels vary throughout a 24 hour period it may be necessary to measure during both day and night periods. Significant noise levels emitted at the weekend as well as during the week will also require similar consideration when undertaking the noise survey. BS4142 Noise Surveys
